KONG: the most durable toys for cats and dogsKONG is a name synonymous with heavy duty, durable and long-lasting toys and dogs and cats alike. Originally designed in the 1970s by a Mr Joe Markham for his rock-chewing (yes, you read that correctly) dog Fritz, the original KONG was inspired by a durable rubber piece of Volkswagen bus suspension, and aimed to provide dogs all over the world with a toy that met their instinctual needs as well as to play. These days, you'll find the KONG Classic to be one of the best dog toys on the market - an example of the mighty triumph of this brand! Now headquartered in Colorado, USA KONG is the name in pet toys.

No toy is indestructible, and all should be used under pet-parent supervision. However, KONG certainly provides some of the toughest toys around - for a monster chewer of a dog, try the KONG Extreme range, all of which are made from an even tougher rubber. And, speaking of manufacturing, all but three KONG toys are made in America, with the exception of a few plush lines. This means KONG toys are very safe - they're also dishwasher or machine washable for convenience.

While KONG toys are generally associated with dogs, you'll also find plenty of KONG toys for cats (including cat scratchers, wobblers and cat KONG lasers), plus toys made from a gentler rubber especially for puppies during their playful teething stages.

  • KONG Classic: The original and the best, this rubber toy is hollow on the inside and can be filled with treats for a puzzle-like playtime

  • KONG Wild Knot Bear: A stuffing-less bear toy with rope insides for dogs that like to chew, but prefer soft toys

  • KONG Cat Laser: The most popular KONG toy for cats - great for chasing and burning off some energy!

  • KONG Puppy Toy: The KONGA Classic but miniaturised for puppies, with a fillable inner core and softer rubber for teething puppies

  • KONG Cat Wobbler: A puzzle toy for cats that encourages them to work for their food and treats

We got the chance to try out the Squeezzz ball dog toy with my 10-pound shih-tzu poodle mix Spicy. For reference, Spicy is pretty playful, but usually gravitates towards plush toys with squeakers, or anything that rolls.

Despite each of our Husky testers working this ball over and over daily, it made it through our month-long testing period. Particularly impressive when most other squeaky toys failed to see out a week.

Puzzle toys come in three different difficulty levels. One is the easiest, and three is the hardest. The Nina Ottoson Brick Puzzle is a level two, and is a great starting point even if your Husky has never used a puzzle toy before.

I give Gretel a Kong (or other treat toy) each time I put her in her kennel. She is very small though so those calories can add up and put some junk in her trunk if you know what I mean. I got creative with ingredients and this is one of the recipes I came up with -butter-banana-coconut-kong-stuffing/

Feeling desperate to amuse my small dogs, i turned to Google and somehow lucked into this site. I almost left it as fast as I found it because kongs usually last 10 minutes. Well, out of the 39 ingredients I chose celery and cucumber, cut up small and narrow, mixed with peanut butter which they love. Here we are 25 mins later and they are still going. And not because I put much more in each Kong . Thank you for this .

The range of KONG dog products and toys is available in sizes for all dog breeds. Choose from small, medium or large sizes, and for serious chewers, check out the extreme range with extra large and king sizes that will hold up even under powerful jaws.

This two-pack toy is great for heavy-chewers. Both the classic wishbone and gum-massaging teething chew are bacon-flavored and will keep your chewing puppy busy for hours. These toys are durable so they will hold up to mouthy puppies. Price: $12.56

After trying all types of toys for my pet Jedi, it was Kong toys that stood the test of time to prove they are as tough as they claim to be! The very idea of a hard to chew away toy and add to that a game to keep the pet entertained as well as for him to get his treat while playing is a brilliant combination! Keep up the great idea n toughness of this product

There started the rise of the beauty of KONG and the realm of dog toys had a new and revolutionary player. Making their own rubber, one that has proved to be of optimum softness for puppies and dogs alike, their products passionately boast their unique flair of originality.

That's right - KONG also offers treats that are compatible with their toys, adding an extra level of reward, skill and fun to playtime. You can stuff your KONG toys with spreads and treats to encourage active playtime and exercise with your dog.

If your dog loves a game of fetch, or simply just wants to chew, KONG toys are versatile and can be used in any way they want to play. Their durable rubber composition is ideal for even the roughest of chewers. Check out the black range of KONG toys which indicate the strongest quality rubber for heavy gnawers like Staffies, Pointers and German Shepherds.

Although cats can be pretty picky about toys, dogs are often more than willing to play with any object they can get their paws on. That means you'll need to be particularly careful when monitoring your dog's playtime to prevent any "unscheduled" activities.

The things that are usually most attractive to dogs are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Dog-proof your home by removing string, ribbon, rubber bands, children's toys, pantyhose and other inedible items that could be swallowed.

Avoid or alter any toys that aren't "dog-proof" by removing ribbons, strings, eyes or other parts that could be chewed off and ingested. Discard toys when they start to break into pieces or are torn. Check labels on stuffed toys to see that they are labeled as safe for children under three years of age and that they don't contain any dangerous fillings. Problem fillings include nutshells and polystyrene beads, but even "safe" stuffings aren't truly digestible. Remember that soft toys are not indestructible, but some are sturdier than others. Soft toys should be machine washable.

If you're thinking about giving your dog rawhide chew toys, be sure to check with your veterinarian about which ones are safe and appropriate for your dog. These toys may pose choking hazards, so give them to your dog only when you can supervise them.

Hard rubber toys such as Nylabone and Kong-type products come in many shapes and sizes and are fun for chewing and carrying around. For dogs that like tug-of-war and chewing on interesting textures, rope and woven toys are usually available in a "bone" shape with knotted ends.

"Busy-box" or "feeder" toys are large rubber shapes that can be filled with treats. By moving the cube around with their nose, mouth and paws, your dog can get to the goodies. Many dogs who tend to eat their food too quickly benefit from being fed through a feeder-style toy.

From 12 weeks to six months, as they lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth erupt through their gums, puppies get the urge to chew on everything. Supplying teething toys will make them more comfortable and save your hands, shoes and furniture. Durable nylon bones and rubber toys can take weeks of chewing without breaking into pieces that might be swallowed. You can buy specialized puppy teething toys designed to be frozen and imprinted with soothing textures.

Rotate your dog's toys weekly by making only a few toys available at a time. Keep a variety of types easily accessible. If your dog has a favorite, like a soft comfort toy, you may want to leave it out all the time.

"Found" toys are often much more attractive than toys that are obviously introduced. A game of finding toys or treats is a good rainy-day activity for your dog, using up energy without the need for a lot of space.

Many of your dog's toys should be interactive. Interactive play is very important for your dog because they need active "people time," which enhances the bond between you and your pet. Try balls, flying disks and other toys that help foster the bond between person and pet.

But let's say your dog turns its nose up at chew toys and balls like mine mostly have. Well, early adopters found they could fill the Kong's hollow interior with food ranging from peanut butter and kibble to peas and cottage cheese. Not surprisingly, their more food-motivated pups became Kong devotees too. So was born a three-in-one toy that is good for chewing, fetching, and feeding. In the world of dogs, it's fair to say this is the ultimate trifecta.

Dr. Carlo Siracusa, DVM, associate professor of clinical animal behavior and welfare at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, told Business Insider that food-enhanced toys, like the Kong, provide excellent environmental enrichment, keeping a dog's mind active and stimulated while promoting a more balanced and less anxious temperament. "They are particularly useful in case of anxiety that manifests when the owner is away and cannot interact with the dog," Dr. Siracusa said.

Right now, I have five Kong toys sitting in my freezer. Yes, FIVE. I prepare a week's worth in advance. It makes cleanup easier, and it's one less thing to remember during the week. The Kong Company also offers a convenient line of edible products to fill their classic toy, and users have shared their own super elaborate concoctions across the internet (yogurt, applesauce, ground beef, and eggs, anyone?). 041b061a72
